BIRMINGHAM - U.S. Representative Artur Davis (D-Birmingham) is scheduled to hosts the 7th Congressional District Military Academy Day Friday, November 3, from 10 a.m. - Noon at the State Fair Park Arena at 2331 Bessemer Road in Birmingham.
This year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest ever with all five service academies (U.S. Military Academy at West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy) on hand to present information to thousands of high school students from across the District. Also, university ROTC programs from Jacksonville State, Auburn, and UAB will be available to answer questions about scholarship opportunities.
Students from Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties as well as the Black Belt are expected to attend with school systems in Birmingham, Fairfield, Midfield and Jefferson County providing transportation to any student who wishes to participate.
Military service academies provide full scholarships to applicants who meet the high qualifications for admittance. After four years, the graduates receive a degree and rank as a commissioned officer. Each graduate is generally required to serve five years on active duty in return. ROTC scholarships may be awarded on a full or partial basis with a similar post-graduate commitment.
