Know Where to Go, Know What to Take

Whether you go to stay with family or friends or seek refuge in a public shelter when you heed an evacuation order, you’ll need an emergency kit.  Take time now to plan your route, tell family members who to contact if you get separated, and gather the items you’ll need to take with you.

Do This Now:

Decide who will be your family’s central contact outside of the evacuation area.  Make sure every family member knows who that person is and has the phone number, just in case you get separated.  Also make sure everyone knows where you plan to travel. Then assemble the items you’ll need when you evacuate and keep your kit where you can get it quickly.

What to Take in Your Emergency Evacuation Kit

  • A waterproof container with your important documents and records – photo IDs, driver license, proof of residence, account numbers and insurance information.  Put in a family photo.
  • Cash in small denominations.  Power outages may mean banks and ATMs are unavailable.
  • Food supplies should include enough non-perishable food for three days, one gallon of bottled water per person per day, coolers for food and ice storage, paper plates, plastic utensils and a manual can opener.
  • Change of clothing, blankets, pillows and sleeping bags.
  • First-aid kit, extra prescription medications, written copies of prescriptions, eyeglasses, hearing aids and other medical items.
  • Toilet paper, cleanup supplies, personal hygiene products, and any special items needed for babies, elderly family members and pets.
  • Battery-operated radio, flashlight, extra batteries, extra keys, tools, NOAA weather radio.
  • Carry-cases and leashes for pets, who should have their own identification.
  • If you’re driving, take road maps, a list of places between your town and your destination where you can stop if the highways are clogged, phone numbers of family and friends.
