Napolitano to Serve as Senior Democrat on Water Panel

Today Congresswoman Grace Napolitano (D-CA38) was named the Ranking Democratic Member of the Water and Power Subcommittee of the House Resources Committee. “Serving as the senior Democrat on the Subcommittee is a great honor and allows me to better shape water policy for California’s future—one of my key interests,” stated the Congresswoman.

The Water and Power Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the Department of Interior’s work on water supply and water contamination issues as well as issues concerning hydroelectric dams. “California’s water supply (including the Colorado River), our area’s ongoing drought, and water cleanup projects are major priorities for me,” commented Napolitano.

This Subcommittee also has oversight of the Bureau of Reclamations, which is working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to clean up the San Gabriel Valley aquifers. “One major reason I sought this post was to address the water needs in the 38th congressional district. Without a safe, clean, reliable water supply, our businesses and families cannot thrive,” Napolitano said.

The Congresswoman will also continue her service on the Small Business Committee and the International Relations Committee. “Small business is the backbone of our economy. I plan to continue and expand my outreach to small business owners in the 38th district and help ensure their access to government contracts, capital and other resources,” noted the Congresswoman.

On the International Relations Committee, Napolitano will continue to serve on the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and will also serve on the newly created International Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Human Rights Subcommittee. “As we continue to face terrorist threats and address the issue of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and North Korea, I am eager to work with my colleagues toward the goals of national security and peace,” concluded Napolitano.
