On February 11, 2006, Congressman Al Green joined state and local officials in recognizing and honoring native Houstonian Vince Young at a ceremony following the Parade of Heroes at Madison High School. The parade was sponsored by the City of Houston, Madison High School, Foley’s department store and the University of Texas.  Congressman Green presented Young and his family with a Special Certificate of Congressional Recognition.

In commemoration of Cinco de Mayo, Congressman Al Green joined community leaders and elected officials from the City of Houston in a celebration and parade that paid tribute to Mexican culture. This parade is an annual celebration in which participants take time to enjoy the great food, music, art, and people of the Houston Mexican community.

Congressman Green joined others in honoring the lifetime achievements of Judge Andrew Jefferson. Judge Jefferson was recognized for his work in law and awarded an endowed chair in trial advocacy at Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.

Veterans, their families, and Congressman Green gathered at the grand opening of the Fisher House-Veterans Administration. This facility is located on the property of the VA and is designed to house family members of veterans in the VA hospital who are receiving long-term care.

The Annual Gay Pride Parade in Houston held by the LGBT community commemorates the struggle for gay rights. Congressman Green and other leaders participated in the event as an expression of solidarity for men and women who identify as members of the gay and lesbian community.

Congressman Green and Houston residents joined in the celebration of Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, which is the annual holiday celebrated on June 19 in the United States to commemorate the ending of slavery. June 19 marks the day in 1865 when word reached African Americans in Texas that slavery in the United States had been abolished. More than two years earlier, on New Year’s Day, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation.

Tsunami Benefit
Tsunami Benefit
Congressman Al Green participated in the Tsunami Relief Benefit Dinner hosted by the Thai Buddhist Temple and Houston’s Thai Community. On December 26, 2004, in the Southern part of Thailand, 400 children became orphans as a result of the devastation wrought by the tsunami. Proceeds from the dinner were contributed to the Thai Red Cross to help rebuild the lives and support the education of the orphaned children.

Tri-Caucus Townhall Meeting
On February 11th, Congressman Al Green joined his fellow Members for a townhall discussion titled "Disaster Relief and Public Policy: Are We Being Served?" The event was hosted by the Congressional Tri-Caucus, which is composed of Congressional Members from the Congressional Asian Pacific Islander Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. The meeting focused on the existing challenges and the perspectives of various local community leaders including: evaluating cultural competency in relief efforts; ensuring the civil rights of immigrant communities; assessing the local economic and political impact, including assisting displaced workers; and assessing the long term impact of the ongoing demographic population shifts on political participation and representation.

In order to discuss the importance of protecting social security, Congressman Al Green met with labor leaders in the community. Cong. Green and labor leaders talked not only about social security, but also about other issues facing the community.

Green Light to Health Living, Health Fair
“Green Light to Healthy Living” Health Fair
Congressman Green organized health organizations from around Houston which serve to improve minority health and target minority health problems. The fair offered participants the opportunity to participate in a blood drive and a blood marrow registration drive as well as receive vaccinations, body mass screenings, blood glucose screenings, and blood pressure tests. Booths also educated Houstonians about how to take preventive steps towards ensuring their health.

Congressman Al Green hosted his First Annual Emerging Business Breakfast entitled: Houston’s Economic and Demographic Transitions: Implications for Emerging Businesses. Green invited more than 15 Houston-based emerging businesses and representatives of local Chambers of Commerce to this event. The keynote speaker, Dr. Stephen L. Klineberg, Professor of Sociology at Rice University, delivered his annual “Houston Area Survey,” which focused on the impact of Houston’s increasing diversity on emerging and minority businesses.

Specifically, the town hall meeting provided participants with information on significant measures that were recently considered in Congress, such as the Veterans Administration’s (VA) FY 06 budget and veteran’s health care benefits and life insurance.

Build HOMES Act Hearing
Congressman Al Green testified before the Subcommittee on Housing and Community Opportunity regarding HR 3186, the Build Houses for Our Military's Enlisted Servicemembers (Build HOMES) Act. The legislation would provide increased access to quality affordable housing for our men and women in uniform and end what Green calls "added income discrimination."

Democratic Caucus Katrina Evacuees Hearing
Representative Al Green joined fellow Democratic Members of the Financial Services Committee and other House Democrats in highlighting the federal government’s inadequate response to Hurricane Katrina housing shortages. With the help of ACORN, several hundred New Orleans evacuees scattered around the country came to the hearing to express their despair at the lack of affordable housing options available.
