ALEXANDER, FRIST APPLAUD ARTS EDUCATION FUNDING FOR TENNESSEE SCHOOLS

August 18th, 2006 - WASHINGTON, D.C - U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) today applauded the announcement by the U.S. Department of Education that the Tennessee Arts Commission Education Division will receive almost $200,000 in grant funding for a program promoting educational reform through arts integration in Tennessee elementary and middle schools.

“With this education grant, Tennessee students will benefit from innovative, arts-based instruction,” Frist said. “I’m proud to have worked with Senator Alexander to secure this funding to help Tennessee students achieve greater academic success using the arts to expand their minds and foster creativity."

“We know that students perform better when they have broad exposure to the arts,” said Alexander. “This grant will enable more Tennessee students to benefit from unique, integrated curricula in which the arts enrich their understanding of other academic subjects like math, science, and language arts.”

Approximately 1,500 East, Middle and West Tennessee students will participate in the Value Plus Schools program, which seeks to improve students’ academic performance through integrating performing, visual, literary and traditional art forms into subjects such as math, science and language arts. Participating schools include Mooreland Heights Elementary in Knoxville, Bradley Academy in Murfreesboro, and Covington Integrated Arts Academy in Covington.
