Second day of veterans hearings highlights claims and seamless transition issues

International President of the Air Force Sergeants Association, retired CMSGT John R. McCauslin, USAF, testified to his organizations concerns that the claims backlog was unacceptable. McCauslin said that “Congress should flatly reject any plan to reduce the number of claims adjudicators.”

National President of the Retired Enlisted Association, retired Gunnery Sgt. Patrick Corbett, USMC, said that he hopes the passage of H.R. 5835, the Veterans Identity and Credit Security Act of 2006, will “go far to correct VA’s IT problems, making them a leader in the IT sector.”

National President of the Military Officers Association of America, retired VADM Norbert Ryan, Jr. USN, was pleased to hear that the Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity would be holding a hearing on Chairman Buyer’s initiative to modernize the GI Bill.

Chairman of the Association for Service Disabled Veterans, Mr. John K. Lopez testified to the importance of funding and medical research for traumatic brain injuries.

President of the National Association for Uniformed Services, retired Maj. Gen. William M. Matz, U.S. Army testified to the need for a “stronger VA budget for investment in appropriate technology and staff to overcome the backlog,” of disability claims.

Ms. Darlene McMartin said that her association is still deliberating on the question to support legislation to allow veterans to hire private counsel.

National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA, Mr. Norman Rosenshein said that his motto is, “The Mission is the Veteran!” Rosenshein asked the committee members to consider using it as their own.

Vice Chairman of the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Michael Bilirakis (R-Fla.) received praise for his tireless advocacy on behalf of veterans in his 24 years of service as a member of Congress and the Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

Director of Washington, DC Office of the National Association of State Directors of Veterans Affairs, Mr. Kerwin Miller testified to the benefit of Community Outbased Clinics in reaching more veterans in local communities.
