U.S. Beef to Japan

Ag Chairman's Statement

Contact: 202-224-2035
Thursday, July 27, 2006

“Today’s announcement from the Japanese regarding the resumption of U.S. beef imports is welcome news to America’s cattlemen and ranchers. For more than six months, Congress has patiently waited for Japan to open their markets, met with their authorities and insisted that markets be reopened or sanctions would be considered.

"I greatly appreciate President Bush taking a personal interest to press for resumption of our imports. I would like to personally thank Prime Minister Koizumi for his efforts to re-establish trade in this important commodity and allow their consumers the opportunity to enjoy the highest quality and safest beef in the world. American cattlemen expect that once American beef reaches Japanese shores, all their shipments will be dealt with in a measured and reasonable manner that will no longer disrupt trade.

"I remain concerned with the restrictions on cattle over 20 months of age, but I am optimistic that internationally-accepted scientific standards will prevail and lead to a full restoration of beef trade between our Nations in the near future.”
