NARAL Pro-Choice America Salutes Rep. Rothman on Teen Pregnancy Measure
May 9, 2006 Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, praised Rep. Steve Rothman for introducing new legislation (H.R.5332) to help prevent teen pregnancy and protect the health and well-being of young people. Keenan also renewed her challenge to anti-choice congressional leaders to allow a vote on this legislation, the Comprehensive Teen Pregnancy Prevention Act. The bill is a companion to Sen. Robert Menendez's legislation introduced earlier this year.

Rep. Rothman Urges Vote on His Bill to Prevent Unintended Pregnancies
March 7, 2006 Rep. Rothman and NARAL Pro-Choice America called on Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to stop playing politics with women’s health and allow a vote on his bipartisan legslation to make emergency contraceptive (EC) available to rape survivors in the emergency room, known as “EC in the ER,” and prevent an estimated 22,000 unintended pregnancies each year.

ith Congressman Rothman's vote, the House of Representatives passed a partial renewal of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) on September 28, 2005, which made improvements to the law, established and expanded the number of rape crisis centers, and increased grant funding for community organizations that work to prevent and eliminate domestic violence.

Rothman Works For Stronger Sexual Assault & Domestic Violence Laws
June 17, 2003 In an effort to raise awareness and encourage prevention of sexual assault, Rep. Rothman helped pass a House resolution recognizing the victims of sexual violence, and commending victims, volunteers, law enforcement officials, forensic workers, and prosecutors for their efforts in preventing sexual assault. Rothman also used the passage of the sexual assault measure to call on Congress to pass the Domestic Violence Victim Protection Act, which he authored.

Rothman Unveils Sweeping Domestic Violence Legislation
March 4, 2002
Just one day before Bergen County recognized the global movement to stop violence against women and girls, Rothman unveiled sweeping legislation he has authored to stop domestic violence in New Jersey and across the country. His legislation, the “Domestic Violence Victim Protection Act,” would have made it easier for police officers responding to domestic violence calls to confiscate weapons on the premises, lowers the burden of proof standard for convicting stalkers, streamlines the court process for domestic violence cases, and helps expedite the entering of protective order information into computer databases.

Update: Rep. Rothman introduced this legislation in March 2002 and has reintroduced it every year since then. It is currently in the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security (H.R. 3594). For more information, please visit http://thomas.loc.gov/ .

Rothman Co-Hosts Free Women's Health Forum
April 17, 2004
Hundreds of women from across Northern New Jersey turned out Saturday, April 17 for a free health forum for women featuring Congressman Steve Rothman (D-Fair Lawn). Following the Forum for Women: "Living a Healthy Lifestyle", which was organized by the HealthCare Institute of New Jersey (HINJ), Rothman said he was very pleased to see so many women come out to learn more about how they can live healthier lives and to take advantage of the free health screenings offered throughout the four hour forum.

American Heart Month: Rothman Urges All Americans, Especially Women, to Learn About the Signs & Causes of Heart Disease
February 25, 2004
In an effort to help raise awareness of heart disease during American Heart Month, Rothman encourages all Americans, especially women, to learn about the signs and causes of cardiovascular disease. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 500,000 women die of heart disease annually and one in ten American women aged 45 to 64 and one in four American women aged 64 or older has some form of heart disease.
