Rothman Amendment to Stop the Privatization of Tax Collection Prevails
Rep. Rothman Questions Treasury Secretary John Snow.June 13, 2006 Rep. Steve Rothman’s (D-NJ) amendment to prevent President Bush from outsourcing the collection of taxes survived its final significant hurdle in the House when a Republican attempt to strike the amendment on a technicality failed and a counter-amendment threatened by Rep. Bill Thomas (R-CA) was not offered at the last minute.

Over the past several months, Rothman has fought the Administration’s plan to hire private, for-profit collection agencies to collect unpaid taxes. He has cited growing privacy concerns with the proposal, as well as its hefty price-tag of $54 million in start-up costs for a scheme that lets private debt collection agencies charge 25 cents for every dollar collected while additional IRS employees will only cost the government 3 cents for every dollar collected. How Are New Jersey Workers Doing This Labor Day?
September 4, 2006 "How can we expect the current and future workforce to grow the American economy if they're not receiving adequate wages and health care or can't afford higher education?" asked Rep. Rothman. "This Labor Day, I think it is vital that we remember why the labor movement began in the first place. When corporate CEOs hoard profits at the expense of workers, those workers' families suffer, along with the businesses and communities they support." Read more.

Republicans Hold Minimum Wage Hostage to More Giveaways to the Super-Rich
July 29, 2006 To tie an increase in the minimum wage to more tax cuts for multi-millionaires and billionaires is morally outrageous – it is obscene," said Rep. Rothman. "I want every single working American to know that this morning at 1:41 AM, the Republican Majority killed any increase in the minimum wage. Instead, they passed a Trojan-Horse bill loaded with "poison pills" adding $800 billion to the national debt to pay for more tax cuts for the richest Americans." Read more.

Democrats Want Time to Review Bush Administration Plan to Cut Most Productive IRS Auditors
July 28, 2006 Today, 23 Members of Congress, led by Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ), expressed “serious concerns” with the Bush Administration’s recently-exposed plan to slash the number of estate and gift tax auditors at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) by September 30. In a letter to IRS Commissioner Mark Everson, lawmakers requested an immediate delay in the plan’s implementation until Congress has adequate time to review it. Read more.

Republican Quest for Line-Item Veto Is a Sham, Estate Tax Repeal a Rip-Off
June 22, 2006 In response to Republican claims that President Bush should have line-item veto power to reign in the out-of-control spending of his own party, Rep. Rothman said: "In my opinion, the claim that President Bush needs line-item veto power over the Congress in order for his own Republican majority to stop deficit spending is self-evidently ridiculous

Fighting for a Minimum Wage Increase
June 20, 2006
Congressman Rothman is fighting this week to increase the federal minimum wage, which is at its lowest point in 50 years when adjusted for inflation. Fighting $8 Million Cut to Clean Water Fund for New Jersey

The vote took place during a House Appropriations Committee meeting on a spending bill for homeland security. Unfortunately, the Republican Majority on the Appropriations Committee rejected the idea of asking the super-rich to sacrifice part of their tax cut, and instead passed a bill that leaves security agencies without the resources they need to protect Americans. Statement on the President's Proposed National Budget
February 13, 2006 In President Bush’s State of the Union address, he spoke of great goals for improving the well-being of all Americans. Unfortunately, the budget he proposed for the next fiscal year—which threatens to dismantle countless services that Americans of all stripes rely upon without asking corporate CEOs or the nation’s millionaires to sacrifice a dime—is yet another sign that we should pay attention to this President’s actions, not his words. Statement on President Bush's State of the Union Address
January 31, 2006
"This President’s budget priorities are fiscally irresponsible and morally reprehensible. His decision to prioritize corporate welfare and tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent of Americans has pushed us into record debt. And New Jerseyans across the state are paying for it in the form of increases in local taxes, increasingly unaffordable gas and oil prices, and cuts to needed government services, such as federal college loan and tuition assistance," said Rothman.
