All of us have known one of the millions of Americans who has been diagnosed with a life-threatening or life-altering disease or disability. With the ever rising costs of health care, the federal government must invest in prevention programs and health research. Achieving these two objectives is the key to a healthier America.

September 2006 This month, in words and pictures, a Bergen County magazine pays tribute to the autism community. Rep. Rothman is featured for his efforts to successfully secure increased funding for the National Institute of Health. Read more.

"Year of Polio Awareness" Resolution Passes Unanimously
September 19, 2006 About his resolution, Rep. Rothman said: "Awareness is the first step to prevention. While many Americans believe that Polio has been eradicated worldwide, that is simply not true. Last year, polio flared in India, Nigeria, and Indonesia, as well as countries that were considered polio-free, such as Namibia. Thousands of new cases were reported, including six in the United States." Read more.

Bringing Attention to the Fight Against Breast Cancer
September 21, 2006 Congressman Rothman joined North Jersey cancer survivors, patients, and their loved ones for the American Cancer Society's "Celebration on the Hill" this week. The event was an emotional two-day affair focused on building and solidifying support for the fight against cancer. Read more.

OHEL Children's Home and Family Services Launches New Jersey Headquarters
September 17, 2006 Congressman Rothman helped OHEL Children's Home and Family Services launch the organization's New Jersey Headquarters in Teaneck. OHEL will work with at-risk youth and provide mental health counseling services for Northern New Jerseyans in the new Teaneck office. It will also facilitate permanent homes for all children in need of foster care.

In Support of Stem Cell Research: "We Must Not Give Up."
July 24, 2006 On Wednesday, July 19, Rep. Rothman voted to override President Bush's veto of legislation to increase federal funding for ethical stem cell research, saying "What should be a debate about promising new research and technology that could lead to cures and treatments for countless diseases and disorders has been overshadowed, yet again, by a debate about when life begins." Fixing Medicare Part D: Eliminate the Doughnut Hole

"Medicare Part D is broken and we must fix it. The new prescription drug program, referred to as Medicare Part D, is overly confusing and not working for seniors. The so-called "doughnut hole," which stops prescription drug coverage for 3.8 million seniors, is one of the most glaring failures of the program," said Rothman. Read more.

Bergen County's First Federally Qualified Health Center Opens in Garfield
May 8, 2006 Congressman Rothman helped cut the ribbon at the opening of Bergen County's first federally qualified health center in Garfield, NJ. In his remarks, Rep. Rothman noted how important it is to care for the uninsured and under-insured and renewed his call for a national, universal single-payer health care system. Read more.

Is Teterboro Airport Hazardous to Your Health?
March 13, 2006 On March 13, the Coalition for Public Health & Safety hosted a meeting to discuss air quality concerns at Teterboro Airport. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Environ Corporation updated the NY/NJ Port Authority, the NJ Meadowlands Commission and others about the status of an air quality study that began this year.

Rothman Urges Vote on His Bill (The CARE Act) to Prevent Unintended Pregnancies
March 7, 2006 Today, Rep. Rothman called on Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert to stop playing politics with women’s health and allow a vote on his bipartisan legislation to make emergency contraceptive (EC) available to rape survivors in the emergency room, known as “EC in the ER,” and prevent an estimated 22,000 unintended pregnancies each year. Bush Administration Turned Away Nearly 5,000 New Jersey Veterans Seeking VA Care in 2005
January 30, 2006 New data show that the President’s decision to ban priority 8 veterans from enrolling in the Veterans Administration (VA) health care system prevented 4,808 New Jersey veterans from receiving VA services. Calling this policy a shameful disgrace, Rep. Rothman introduced legislation called the “Honor Our Commitment to Veterans Act” to reverse the Administration’s policy on Priority 8 veterans’ enrollment. Read more.

Rothman Calls on President Bush to Prevent Increases in Veterans' Health Care Premiums
January 24, 2006 Noting that the President has consistently stated his appreciation for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women and their families, Rothman asked him to prioritize veterans’ health care: “Government should look to improve TRICARE and provide greater funding for this important program, rather than shift the financial burden to those who have already sacrificed so much for our nation.”
