(Washington, DC)On Thursday, July 27, New Jersey principals from Bergen, Essex, and Middlesex Counties met with Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) to discuss federal funding for education. In particular, they noted that there is a shortage of principals in New Jersey and agreed with Rep. Rothman about the importance of federal funding for the School Leadership Program (SLP). This program provides money to high-need areas, such as New Jersey, to help states recruit, train, and retain principals and assistant principals. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which makes recommendations about all federal spending, Rothman fought to fully fund this grant program and successfully defeated President Bush's attempt to eliminate it.
