Davis Secures Federal Help for Local Projects

June 14, 2006

Washington, D.C. Congressman Tom Davis (R-VA-11th) has been able to win more than $70 million in federal assistance to address transportation and quality of life needs in Northern Virginia.

The projects are included in the Fiscal Year 2007 Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill, which passed the House today by a vote of 406 to 22.

"These projects are aimed at relieving congestion on our region's roads and rails, speeding the addition of mass transit to the Dulles Airport and Richmond Highway corridors, and improving our community parks and ball fields," Davis said.

Among the items Davis won funding for:

  • $61.5 million to purchase new rail cars for Metro. This continues Congressman Davis' efforts to ensure Metro is able to keep up with growing demand.
  • $5 million for the Dulles Rail extension (in conjunction with Rep. Frank Wolf, R-VA).
  • $2 million for improvements to the 14th Street Bridge and George Washington Parkway.
  • $2 million for construction of a High-Occupancy Vehicle / bus ramp at the Vienna Metro Station. This project will help commuters gain easier access to the station, which will be especially important as high density development at the station gets underway.
  • $2 million to widen I-66 inside the Beltway (in conjunction with Rep. Wolf)
  • $500,000 for the construction of an expanded interchange at Rte.1 and Rte. 123 in Prince William County, Virginia.
  • $250,000 to expedite completion of the express bus service along the Richmond Highway (Route 1) Corridor (in conjunction with Rep. Jim Moran, D-VA)
  • $250,000 to revitalize Ossian Park in Annandale. These funds will help reduce gang activity at the park and make it an anchor for community events.
  • $50,000 to make much-needed improvements to the athletic fields at Mason District Park in Annandale.
