Rothman: 'We Can Make Government Work for All People'

On Tuesday, November 7, 2006, the American people voted for a Democratic Majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. Congressman Steve Rothman's (D-NJ) statement in the wake of this historic election follows:

"New Jerseyans and the rest of America voted for a new direction on Tuesday and I am prepared to work hard to change our nation's policies to make that possible. As a member of the new Democratic House Majority, I will seek a wiser approach to our national security and ensure that all Americans benefit from economic growth.

"In particular, the American people have made clear that they want a new approach to the war in Iraq. Over 2,800 servicemen and women have given their lives and our nation has spent more than one-third of a trillion dollars so that Iraqis can live in a free and democratic society. Now, it is up to the Sunnis, Shiites, and Kurds to determine the future of their country. America should redeploy all our troops out of Iraq so that we can rebuild our military and refocus our strength on fighting the real war on terror and improving homeland security.

"This Election Day also proved that people support the Democratic plan to raise the minimum wage, expand opportunities for college, and make health care more affordable. As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, which determines all federal spending, I believe that we can accomplish these goals and balance our national budget. It begins with prioritizing investments in our people - and not special interests.

"I know that we can make government work for all people. As I have done for the past ten years, I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle for a change in our national policies. And I promise all 650,000 people of the 9th Congressional District that my democratic colleagues and I will honor our pledge to the American people. We will work cooperatively with Republicans, Independents, and the President of the United States to implement our plan for a better future."
