Moran Fights for Local Access to Renew Driver's Licenses

Asks DHS Secretary to Continue Allowing County Treasurers to Provide this Service

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerry Moran has asked the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to recognize the authority of county treasurers in Kansas to continue to renew driver's licenses. DHS is currently working to develop rules that may change who is able to issue driver's licenses and other identification documents.

In a letter to DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff, Moran emphasized the importance of this service to rural Kansans.

"Many Kansans enjoy the convenience of being able to renew their driver's license, change their name or address, or have other license permits processed by their local county treasurer," Moran said. "Kansans should not have to travel long distances to renew their driver's licenses."

Mark Schemm, Smith County Treasurer, added, "Let's keep homeland security at home. It is wrong to force senior citizens and the disabled to travel long distances to obtain driver's license services at regional centers."
