Moran Requests Meeting with Japanese Prime Minister

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerry Moran and other Members of the House Agriculture Committee have requested a meeting with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi of Japan when he visits the U.S. later this month. The committee members requested the meeting to discuss the reopening of the Japanese border to U.S. beef.

"American producers want to see Japan's border reopen for U.S. beef," Moran said. "A face-to-face meeting with the Japanese Prime Minister will allow us to convey how the closure of the border affects our farmers and ranchers and find out when American beef will be back in Japanese households."

After a brief reopening of its market, Japan again closed the door to U.S. beef products when ineligible veal was discovered in a January shipment from New York. Moran is a senior member of the House Committee on Agriculture.
