House Passes Moran's Legislation for Memorial Honoring Dwight D. Eisenhower in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerry Moran today announced unanimous House passage of the companion legislation he introduced granting initial site approval for the Dwight D. Eisenhower memorial in Washington, D.C.  This legislation passed the Senate earlier this month and will now be sent to the President to be signed into law.

"This is the first step in making this tribute to one of Kansas' most famous sons a reality," Moran said. "President Eisenhower is one of our country's greatest historical figures and a memorial celebrating his life and contributions has been a long time coming."

A four-acre section near the Department of Education has been designated by the Eisenhower Commission for the memorial. Monument design plans will now proceed and site dedication will occur later this summer.

Eisenhower became a popular figure and one of the most beloved military leaders in American history after leading the U.S. and its allies to victory in World War II. He earned the rank of five-star general and went on to become the first commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's military forces in Europe. In 1953, Eisenhower became the 34th President of the United States.

Moran serves on the Eisenhower Commission, which was formed in 1999 to promote the legacy of President Eisenhower. All members of the Kansas delegation have joined Moran in sponsoring this legislation, including Representatives Jim Ryun, Todd Tiahrt and Dennis Moore.
