Moran Statement on Japan Halting

Imports of U.S. Beef

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jerry Moran today released this statement on Japan's announcement to halt imports of U.S. beef.

"The news this morning from Japan was very disappointing. Having worked for two years to regain access to this market, I am concerned about this unfortunate situation. We do not know at this time whether this is an outright ban or a temporary suspension and how long it will last. By working with industry and Department of Agriculture officials, I hope we can correct this error and prevent future occurrences."

In 2003, the First Congressional District of Kansas produced nearly five billion pounds of beef, making it the largest beef producing congressional district in the nation.

Moran is a senior member of the House Agriculture Committee.
