Today in Iraq and Afghanistan , millions of people are experiencing freedom because of Americans in uniform. From providing medical care and rebuilding schools, or standing guard so that Iraqis can vote on their new constitution, our troops are making a real difference in these once oppressed countries.
Today, there are more than 3 million men and women currently serving our armed forces. We owe each one a great debt of gratitude. We have asked them to defend our nation and we need to let them know each and every day that they are not forgotten.
Congressman Gutknecht has voted consistently to support our troops in the field. In the 109th Congress, he supported the 2005 Emergency Supplemental bill (H.R. 1815) to pursue the global war on terror. He also supported the 2006 Defense Appropriations bill (H.R. 1268), which funds the Department of Defense, military construction, and personnel.
Saddam Hussein posed a clear and present danger to his neighbors and the Iraqi people. Thanks to Americans in uniform, that threat has been eliminated. While much work remains to stabilize and rebuild Iraq , our troops are very positive about the progress being made there.
In the end, the future of Iraq belongs to the people of Iraq. We have given them a chance. Now they must step up and take responsibility. The sooner they can shoulder the security demands of their country, the earlier our forces can return home.
Congressman Gutknecht recently visited Minnesota National Guard troops preparing for deployment to Iraq. He met with them at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, to see first-hand how they were trained and equipped.
