Overview

The recent spike in gas prices has been felt across the nation. While many blame the big oil companies, current high gas prices are the result of a number of complex problems: Increased worldwide demand, limited reserves of crude oil, the location of oil reserves in unfriendly countries, and government restraints on domestic drilling all contribute to the situation.

Recent Legislation & Accomplishments
  • In November of 2005, Congressman Gutknecht introduced the 10 by 10 Act (HR 4357) to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, help protect the environment, and create a home-grown source of fuel. This legislation calls for 10 percent of our nation's gasoline to come from renewable sources by 2010.

  • The House passed the Federal Energy Price Protection Act of 2006 (H.R. 5253) to give the Federal Trade Commission power to punish gasoline price gouging.

  • The House also passed the Gasoline for America 's Security Act of 2005 (HR 3893). This legislation would allow the construction of more pipelines to distribute oil and gas, and promotes conservation through carpooling.
