We know that Americans can work together to meet the serious challenges facing our country, create a stronger nation, and build a safer world. ...(more)

Statement for the Joint Hearing of the Subcommittee on International Terrorism and Nonproliferation and Subcommittee on the Middle East and Central Asia on “Hizballah’s Global Reach”
- (Washington, DC) - I want to thank the chairs for organizing this joint hearing. Hizballah’s emergence, not only as a Shia militia and political party, not only as an international terrorist organization, but as a strategic proxy for the Iranian theocracy. Hizballah is surely worth the attention of Congress. ...(more)

Read Gary's Statement in Support of Renaming Flushing Post Office in Honor of New York State Senator Dr.Leonard Price Stavisky
- (Washington, DC) - Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of H.R. 5923, a bill that would designate the United States Postal Service facility located at 29-50 Union Street in Flushing, New York, as the Dr. Leonard Price Stavisky Post Office. It is more than fitting that a Federal facility be named after Leonard in a community that he so ably represented for so many years; and I note for the record that the bill is cosponsored by every Member of the New York State delegation, both sides of the aisle. ...(more)

Ackerman Blasts Administration on Afghanistan and Iraq
- (Washington, DC) - Well, Mr. Chairman, they’re back!  The Taliban that is.  The terrorists, the mid-wives of the September 11 attacks, the protectors of Osama bin Laden.  I guess they didn’t get the memo telling them they’d been defeated almost 5 years ago, because they most certainly are not defeated, not even close. ...(more)

Read Gary's Statement “Is There a Clash of Civilizations?”
- (Washington, DC) - Thank you, Madam Chairwoman.  The 5 year anniversary of the September 11 attacks is an appropriate point for us to pause and take stock of the war against terrorism, but I find the subject of today’s hearing alarming.  I see two possibilities.  One, that 5 years into this conflict, we need to have a hearing to help define and describe our enemy because the Bush Administration has ignored one of the most basic and obvious dictums of strategy:  to know one’s enemy.  And that without accurately understanding who and what they’re fighting against, they can’t hope to fashion a successful response.  The second possibility is that this hearing is just another pre-election gambit to scare the public and bolster support for the war in Iraq by engaging in ominous historic make-believe and proposing some parallel to World War II.  Actually, there is also a third possibility, that both of these interpretations are correct. ...(more)
