Intern Program

Internships

Congressional Internships are a valuable experience and an important resource to the function of Capitol Hill offices. The internship program can help sharpens one's interest in government - allowing him or her to apply knowledge already gained in the classroom. No matter which field you choose to pursue, internship experiences are an important foundation for a successful career.

Throughout the year, each of my offices conducts a thorough internship process. Our office works with each intern to design a program to meet his or her interests and needs, such as earning academic credit and/or working in a specific area of interest (i.e. military affairs, communications, community and economic development, etc.).

The program is a unique opportunity to receive practical experience in national affairs at the federal level. In a Senate office, the pace can be fast and students should be prepared to meet a new challenge every day!

Sincerely,
Rick Santorum

The Internship
The internship program is quite diverse. In the Washington office, interns have the opportunity to engage in the legislative and communications process. In the Pennsylvania offices, interns will have the opportunity to engage in constituent casework and community and economic development.
Among the typical duties that past and present interns have described:
  • Drafting correspondence to constituents, various government agencies and government officials
  • Researching legislation
  • Observing Committee hearings
  • Attending social informative events with staff members
  • Assisting with constituent casework and press relations
  • Working with local community and business leaders
  • Attending press conferences
  • Drafting press releases for distribution to Pennsylvania media
What a previous intern has to say about the program:
"The benefits gained from being an intern for Senator Santorum are vast. By applying my own political strengths and by learning all aspects of the federal government, I have sharpened my interests and assisted the people of Pennsylvania."
-- Lesley Albanese
