Welcome to the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program
A program of the Preparedness Directorate's Office of Grants and Training in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, grants are awarded to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the public and fire service personnel from fire and related hazards. Three types of grants are available: Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG), Fire Prevention and Safety (FP&S;), and Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER). This Website provides a description of the three types of grants available and offers resources to help fire departments prepare and submit grant requests.

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters
Grants (AFG)
is to meet the firefighting and emergency
response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated
emergency medical services organizations.

The purpose of the Staffing for Adequate Fire
and Emergency Response (SAFER)
grants is to
help fire departments increase the number of
frontline firefighters.

The Fire Prevention and Safety Grants (FP&S;) grants
support projects that enhance the safety of
the public and firefighters from fire and related
hazards.

The application period for the Fiscal Year 2006 Fire Prevention and Safety Grants will open within the forthcoming weeks. As in the past, the application period will be open for at least 30 days. Notification of the official application start date will be posted on this website as well as distributed through the e-newsletter available at this site. (Posted: 9/3/2006)
