As Chairman of the Aging Committee, I am committed to bringing seniors’ issues to the forefront of our national debate as we strive to help America’s aging population meet growing challenges and educate our seniors about the exciting opportunities that await them in their golden years.
The 109th Congress is confronting many challenges that impact senior citizens: Stem cell research to combat diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; importation of prescription drugs; Social Security reform; and reauthorization of the Older Americans Act are all currently being debated. Ensuring the Medicaid program remains sustainable as a vital safety-net for millions of Americans in the 21st Century is also a chief concern for me and my colleagues on the Committee.
In addition, as rapid advances in medical science are allowing Americans to live longer, fuller lives, special attention must be paid to the needs of the Baby Boomer generation who will begin retiring in greater numbers in the coming years. Issues such as long term care, pensions and ensuring seniors have ample opportunities to volunteer and make contributions to their communities will receive much attention in the coming months.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts and concerns as we embark on an ambitious agenda to ensure the needs of our “greatest generation” are properly looked after in the United States Congress.
