U.S. SEN. WAYNE ALLARD COMMENTS ON NEW DEFENSE SECRETARY

November 8th, 2006 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Following is a statement from U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) regarding Robert Gates replacing Donald Rumsfeld as U.S. Department of Defense Secretary:

“U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has served President Bush and this country admirably in one of the most tumultuous times in our history. He clearly understood the challenges of our post 9-11 world and was a forceful advocate for transforming our military to meet these 21st century threats. Because of his efforts, we are safer now than we were six years ago. I wish Secretary Rumsfeld well in the future, and thank him for his service.

“With Secretary Rumsfeld's departure and yesterday’s elections, I look forward to working in the 110th Congress with my Senate colleagues towards reconciling competing visions for what needs to happen in Iraq. The mission of our military men and women in Iraq is of utmost importance to us here at home. We must overcome the challenges in Iraq and continue to make progress in the fight against terrorism,” said Allard.
