Our District

Wisconsin's 2nd CD stands apart from most Congressional districts because of its diverse geography. It is approximately one third urban, one third suburban and a third rural in nature.

My district includes some of the most fertile and picturesque rural land in Wisconsin. Our farmers help make Wisconsin the #1 alfalfa producing state in the country as well as maintain our state's reputation as America's Dairyland. The district also includes Madison, the state capital, a city of more than 200,000 people. And thousands more constituents live in villages, towns, and cities across the counties that make up this Congressional district.

My district includes some of the most beautiful parts of America. With scenic trout streams, rolling hills dotted with farms, lakes, cross country ski trails and golf courses, there are ample opportunities to explore and enjoy south central Wisconsin

Madison, the state capital, is home to the Monona Terrace Convention Center, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, as well as the world famous University of Wisconsin. Madison is often ranked as one of the most livable cities in America. The quality of life in Wisconsin's capital city is high, based on a low unemployment rate, low crime rate, rich cultural offerings, diverse neighborhoods, superb recreational facilities, and some of America's best public schools.

Surrounding Madison are great communities that are wonderful places to live, work, raise families, and visit. Many of our cities and villages retain the heritage of their original settlers -- Norwegians in Mount Horeb and Stoughton, the Swiss in Monroe and New Glarus. We boast the "only Waunakee in the world" as well as Baraboo, the birthplace of the Ringling Brothers Circus and home to the International Crane Foundation. Our distinctive communities have endured and prospered for generations.

The rural parts of the 2nd District are especially important to the character and economy of Wisconsin. Those who farm the land are confronted routinely by significant economic challenges, outdated dairy policies and urban sprawl. Yet, the determination of the family farmers I represent in Dane, Columbia, Jefferson, Green, Rock and Sauk Counties reinforce my belief that the way of life of our small, family farmers is one that must be preserved.
