A Senate Page from Idaho

I have the privilege of appointing one high-school-aged Idahoan as a Senate Page each semester. Pages provide a great deal of support to the Senate. If you have ever been to the Senate Chamber, or watched the proceedings on C-SPAN, you have seen the Pages, in their blue blazers, tirelessly assisting with the business of the Senate. What you do not have the opportunity to see is all the work they do behind the scenes to keep the Senate moving smoothly, while at the same time keeping up with their studies in the Senate school and forming lasting friendships with other Pages from around the nation.

A Capital Experience

There are about thirty Page positions in the United States Senate which serve its one hundred members; therefore, not all Senators are able to appoint Pages. The spring session runs from January through June, the summer session from mid-June through mid-August, and the fall session from September through January.

The Senate Page program is an opportunity for young people to experience the Legislative Branch of our federal government and play an important role in the day to day operations of the Senate. The program allows students the opportunity to live away from home and attend school with students from across the country. Page eligibility is limited to juniors in high school who will be 16 years old on or before the date of appointment.

Pages are paid a stipend of approximately $1650 per month before taxes. Pages are required to live in the Daniel Webster Senate Page Residence Hall during the school year. The cost of living in the residence hall is $600 per month and includes breakfast and dinner Monday through Friday. The residence hall is located two blocks from the Hart Senate Office Building. The staff includes a Program Director, Staff Assistant and four proctors. Residence security is maintained by the United States Capitol Police on a 24-hour basis.

Two floors of the hall encompass living quarters. One is designated for young men, and the other for young women. Each room is designed for four to six occupants and is furnished with twin size bunk or loft style beds, desks, chairs, and bureaus. Each room has closet space, a private bath and a telephone. Laundry facilities are provided within the building.

During the school year, a Page's day begins at 6:15 a.m. when he or she reports to the United States Senate Page school which is located in the lower level of the Senate Page Residence Hall. Following classes at the Page School, which extend until 9:30 a.m., Pages report for duty to their respective Cloakrooms and work until the Senate adjourns.

Page duties consist primarily of delivering correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional Complex. Other duties include taking messages for Members, calling them to the phone, preparing the Chamber for Senate sessions, and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. A rotation system is practiced so that every Page has an opportunity to experience all areas of service.
