US Service Academy Nominations

Thank you for your interest in obtaining a nomination to one of the United State Service Academies. Our service academies have a long tradition of developing the minds and physical abilities of our brightest students to become officers in the service of the United States military. I consider my nominations to the military academies to be both a privilege and one of my most enjoyable responsibilities as a member of the United States Senate.

My qualifications for a nomination are much like the qualifications sought by the academies. I consider an applicant's character, scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, goals and motivation prior to making a nomination. The information provided on this page will assist you in successfully completing the nomination application process so that I will have all the information I need to choose the best qualified applicants.

Idaho has many fine young men and women, but only a few look into attending an academy. Serving your country to help defend freedom and democracy is an honorable and noble profession that deserves your serious consideration. Good luck in your search for higher education options, and I hope you choose wisely. Please contact my Idaho Falls regional office if you have any questions.

Academy Information

Entrance into an academy means at least nine years of military life&emdash;four in college, earning a degree toward your post military career goals, and five as a military officer in the service of your country. I invite you to contact the academies and learn more about what they will expect of you and what you can expect from them. Once you complete four years at an academy, not only will you be a commissioned officer but your education will be worth $250,000, paid for by the United States government. After military service, many graduates go on to successful careers in public service, private industry, higher education, medicine, and law.

How to Apply

To apply for an academy nomination, please contact my office between the spring of your junior year and the beginning of your senior year, with your intention to seek a nomination and an application package will be sent to you. You may also download and print the Application Package (PDF, 49KB).

The initial application must be submitted to my Idaho Falls regional office no later than October 31. All other required materials, such as transcripts, test scores, and letters of reference, must be received by December 1. Please see the checklist below for a complete list of required materials.

Through the first part of December, an advisory committee comprised of Idaho residents carefully reviews the files of all the applicants and makes recommendations upon which I base my final decision. At the end of the month, I nominate ten Idahoans per vacant seat at each of the academies, and announce these nominations by December 30.

From those nominated, the academies make their final choices the following spring.

Tips for Success

  • Send Certified Test Scores

Like colleges, senators have test score mailing codes for your convenience. Please make sure to use these codes to send a certified copy of your SAT or ACT scores along with certified copies of school transcripts.
SAT code: 4468     ACT code: 7123

  • Contact the Academies Early:

It is very important to contact the academies early so medical tests may be scheduled and completed. On occasion a medical waiver may be required and because the process is lengthy, you want to ensure yourself enough time to complete the process before it costs you acceptance into an academy.

  • Residency Requirements:

When seeking an academy nomination from your Senators or Representatives, you may not apply in more than one state.

Apply within the state that is your legal residence. Out of state students must use their parents' legal residence as their own. If you are a student in Idaho but your parents' legal residence is in another state, you must request a nomination from the Congressional representatives in your parents' state. Listed below are key questions that determine residency for you and your parents:

In which state do your parents pay taxes?
In which state are your parents' cars registered?
In which state do your parents vote?

You may request a nomination in Idaho if your father or mother is a legal resident of another state yet your other parent works in Idaho and is able to answer yes to the above questions.

If you are applying from out of state, please provide proof you meet the residency requirements.
