Each year more and more New Hampshire families enjoy a visit to their Nation’s Capital. Senator Sununu can help make your trip to Washington, D.C. memorable by helping to arrange tours of federal government buildings and providing information on some of our Capital's most popular attractions. Below, please find information that you could use to help plan a trip to Washington, DC.

Frequently asked about points of interest:

  • Arlington National CemeteryArlington, VA, (703) 607-8000. Metro: Arlington Cemetery; also accessible by Tourmobile. The Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns occurs every hour on the hour from October 1 to March 31; from April 1 through September 30, the guard is changed every half hour, and the cemetery closing time moves from 5 to 7 p.m.

  • Bureau of Engraving and Printing (The Mint) – 14th and C Streets, SW, (202) 874-2330. Metro: Smithsonian.

    • Congressional/VIP Tours
      The Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) is one of Washington’s most popular attractions. Senator Sununu has access to a limited supply of tickets for Congressional tours of the BEP, which are available to New Hampshire residents. Congressional tours are conducted Monday through Friday at 8:15 a.m. and 8:45 a.m. There are no tours on weekends and federal holidays. A 4 p.m. Congressional tour is added during the months of May through August.

      General Tours
      The public may obtain free, same-day tickets (which are required March through August) on a first-come, first-served basis at the ticket booth located on the 15th Street side of the building (Raoul Wallenberg Place) starting at 8 a.m. during weekdays. General public tours run every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. From May through August, an evening tour also is available.

      Tickets are not required from September through February. Visitors to the BEP may line up at the Visitors’ Entrance on 14th Street; the tour takes approximately 45 to 50 minutes.

      Those who wish to visit only the Visitors’ Center – open from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. – may enter on the 14th Street side of the building. The Visitors’ Center includes exhibits and shops.
  • Federal Bureau of Investigation – J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, 935 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, (202) 324-3447, (202) 324-1016 (TTY). The FBI is currently closed for tours during extensive renovations.

  • Ford’s Theatre & Lincoln Museum511 10th Street, NW, (202) 426-6924. Metro: Metro Center.

  • Library of CongressThomas Jefferson Building, 1st Street, SE, (202) 707-8000. Metro: Capitol South. Located adjacent to the United States Capitol building, the Library of Congress is the research arm of Congress and is the largest library in the world, holding more than 125 million items. Tours of the Library of Congress may be arranged through Senator Sununu’s office. Public tours also are available, and are offered in the Great Hall of the Thomas Jefferson Building at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Saturday tours are available at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

  • National Archives700 Constitution Avenue, NW, (202) 501-5000. Metro: Archives-Navy Memorial. The National Archives in Washington houses the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, the Bill of Rights, and other historic documents.

  • National Mall – (202) 426-6841, Metro: Smithsonian.

  • National Zoo3001 Connecticut Avenue, NW, (202) 673-4800 or (202) 673-7800 (TTY). Metro: Woodley Park/Zoo/Adams Morgan or Cleveland Park. The National Zoo is open year-round and admission is free.

  • The PentagonArlington, VA, (703) 697-1776. Tours of the Pentagon, the headquarters of the U.S. Department of Defense, are currently available by reservation to educational organizations and other groups.

  • The Smithsonian Institution – The Smithsonian museums in Washington are open daily, except on Christmas Day. Most of the museums are open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. For information, call (202) 357-2700 (voice) or (202) 357-1729 (TTY).

  • Tourmobile Service – The National Park Service has concessionaire-operated guided Tourmobiles that travel from Capitol Hill to Arlington Cemetery and points in between with reboarding privileges the day of ticket purchase. For information, call (202) 554-5100 or (888) 868-7707.

  • United States Botanic Garden100 Maryland Avenue, SW, (202) 225-8333. Metro: Federal Center SW. Located at the corner of Independence Avenue and 1st Street, SW. Group tours are available by request, except on Saturday and Sunday, or during any shows.

  • United States Capitol Building – (202) 225-6827. Metro: Union Station or Capitol South. In addition to tours of the U.S. Capitol led by Senator Sununu’s office, the Capitol Guide Service conducts free guided tours of the Capitol from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Tours last approximately 30 to 40 minutes. Visit the Ticketing and Information Kiosk on the Southwest corner of the Capitol grounds for tickets. The Capitol is closed to the public on Sundays, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Thanksgiving.

  • United States Holocaust Memorial Museum100 Raoul Wallenberg Place, SW, (202) 488-0400. Metro: Smithsonian. The museum is located just south of Independence Avenue, between 14th Street and Raoul Wallenberg Place (previously 15th Street). There is also an entrance on 14th Street, next to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.


    The permanent exhibition is recommended for ages 11 and up. Daniel’s Story is recommended for ages 8 and up. The visit will take from 1 1/2 to 3 hours. The Permanent Exhibition requires a timed entry pass to begin the self-guided tour of the Museum’s primary exhibition. Passes are free and are not required for the museum’s other exhibitions, memorials, resources and facilities.
  • United States Supreme CourtOne 1st Street, NE, (202) 479-3000. Metro: Capitol South or Union Station. Senator Sununu’s office is able to assist New Hampshire residents interested in visiting the Supreme Court, which features several educational programs, including exhibits and a theater. Lectures are given in the courtroom every hour on the half-hour, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., on days that the Court is not in session; the Supreme Court is closed on weekends and federal holidays. Visitors are able to attend oral arguments, which are usually heard from October to April – limited seating is available on a first come, first-served basis. For those who wish to observe the Court in session for a brief time, there is a separate waiting line. Starting in mid-May and lasting through June, the Court takes the bench on Mondays at 10 a.m. for the release of orders and opinions – these sessions are also open to the public. 
  • Washington National CathedralMassachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues, NW, (202) 364-6616. Docent-led and self-guided tours of the Cathedral are available throughout the year.

  • The White House1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, (202) 456-7041. Metro: Federal Triangle, Metro Center or McPherson Square. Senator Sununu is glad to help New Hampshire residents visit the White House. Self-guided tours are currently open to groups of ten or more on a first-come, first-served basis, and are available from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Requests for tours, which are scheduled by the White House about one month in advance of the proposed tour date, should be submitted as soon as possible to Senator Sununu’s office; the White House accepts requests up to six months in advance. If a request is approved, the White House requires additional information from tour participants for security purposes.

    Additionally, the White House Visitor Center, located at the corner of 15th and E Streets, NW, features many aspects of the White House, including its architecture, furnishings, first families, social events, and relations with the press and world leaders, as well as a thirty-minute video. The center is open seven days a week, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

 

Monuments and Memorials:

  • Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee MemorialArlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA, (703) 235-1530. Metro: Arlington Cemetery. Tourmobile sightseeing transportation is available.

  • Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial – Located near the National Mall on the western edge of the Tidal Basin, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Smithsonian. Park Rangers are available from 8 a.m. to midnight every day except Christmas. There are no fees to visit any of the monuments or memorials in the park.

  • Korean War Veterans Memorial – Located in West Potomac Park near the Lincoln Memorial, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Smithsonian or Foggy Bottom. Park Rangers present interpretive themes and answer questions daily from 8 a.m. to midnight, except on Christmas Day. A bookstore in the nearby Lincoln Memorial sells informational items relating to both the memorial and the Korean War.

  • Lincoln Memorial – Located in West Potomac Park, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Foggy Bottom or Smithsonian.

  • Thomas Jefferson Memorial – South bank of the Tidal Basin, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Smithsonian. Pedal boats are available for rental at the Swan Boathouse.

  • U.S. Navy Memorial & Naval Heritage Center701 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Suite 123, (202) 737-2300 ext. 768 (events hotline). Metro: Archives-Navy Memorial. There is a motor coach drop on Pennsylvania Avenue, between 7th and 9th Streets, in front of the memorial.

  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial – Located at Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue, NW, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Foggy Bottom or Smithsonian.

  • Washington Monument – Located on the Mall at 15th Street, SW, (202) 426-6841. Metro: Smithsonian. Complimentary tickets, which are required, are available at the booth located on the west side of 15th Street, on the Mall.

  • The Corcoran Gallery of Art Museum500 17th Street, NW, (202) 639-1700. Located one block west and south of the White House; special needs access is at 1701 E Street. Metro: Farragut West or Farragut North.

  • The National Building Museum401 F Street, NW, (202) 272-2448. Located between 4th and 5th Streets; special needs access at 4th and G Streets. Metro: Judiciary Square.

  • National Postal Museum2 Massachusetts Avenue, NE, (202) 633-5555. Located in the Washington City Post Office Building on Capitol Hill, next to Union Station. Metro: Union Station. Leave Metro through the Massachusetts Avenue exit; as you get off the escalator, the National Postal Museum will be to your left.

  • The Phillips Collection1600 21st Street, NW, (202) 387-2151. The Phillips Collection is located in Washington’s Dupont Circle neighborhood, one-half block off of Massachusetts Avenue, between Q and R Streets. Metro: Dupont Circle. From Metro, exit to Q Street; at the top of the escalator, turn left on Q Street, proceed one block to 21st Street.

  • The Textile Museum – 2320 S Street, NW, (202) 667-0441. Metro: Dupont Circle. From Metro, exit to Q Street; proceed north on Connecticut Avenue. At the intersection of Connecticut Avenue, Florida Avenue and S Street, cross Florida Avenue and turn left. Turn immediately right onto S Street. Proceed on S Street for 2 long blocks to The Textile Museum, located on the left.

Tours include the Hall of States and Hall of Nations, the center's main theaters, and dozens of paintings, sculptures, and other artworks given to the center by foreign countries.

Tours of the Diplomatic Reception Rooms are available at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m., Monday through Friday. Reservations are required and should be made at least four weeks in advance. Because of the large volume of requests for this fine arts tour, which is not recommended for children under age 12, reservations may be made up to three months in advance. Contact the Department of State Tour Office to schedule a tour. The State Department Tour Office is closed on weekends and holidays.

  • The National Aquarium – 14th Street, NW, between Constitution and Pennsylvania Avenues, (202) 482-2825. Metro: Federal Triangle.
  • Old Post Office Tower Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street, NW, (202) 606-8691. Metro: Federal Triangle or Archives-Navy Memorial. The Old Post Office features a 270-foot tower observation level, which provides one of the best views of the city.
  • The United States National Arboretum 3501 New York Avenue, NE, (202) 245-2726. Located 2.2 miles from the United States Capitol building, the National Arboretum includes 446 acres of trees, shrubs and assorted plants in the northeast section of Washington. The Arboretum grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Christmas. Admission is free. The Arboretum may be toured by car, bus, bicycle, tram, or on foot. Guided tours are available for groups of ten or more with advance notice of at least three weeks. Visitors may enter through entrances on New York Avenue and on R Street.

  • U.S. Naval ObservatoryMassachusetts Avenue at 34th Street, NW, (202) 762-1467. Public tours of the United States Naval Observatory (USNO), which are free, are offered on alternating Monday evenings, except on federal holidays, from 8:30 to 10 p.m. Requests for reservations, which are required, should be submitted at least 4 to 6 weeks before a scheduled tour. Visitors who do not have a reservation will not be admitted to the USNO grounds. The tour includes presentations about the Master Clock, observations through telescopes (weather permitting), a video presentation on the mission and history of the observatory, and discussions with staff astronomers.
