It’s been some time now since I’ve had a chance to let you know what we’re working on these days. I hope your summer was as enjoyable and productive as mine. I spent August traveling around the country, visiting with our members and listening to people. What I heard they want is for us to do something about border security, national security and gasoline prices. I could also see that our conservative base is motivated for this November while Democrats are not because they don’t stand for anything.

If the information we have read about the behavior of Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., seems as obvious to a jury as it does to me, he deserves to be vigorously prosecuted. I do not want to do anything that will interfere with that prosecution.

Hello, everyone. We had another busy week here in the House of Representatives. We spent a lot of time talking about the gas crisis which is happening across America. And it really is a crisis. Gas is over $3 a gallon in many parts of the country. Our families are hurting. Our businesses are hurting. It’s placing a real drain on the monthly budget. Our economy is strong, and we want to keep it that way. And that means getting a handle on our nation’s energy problem. I’ve talked to our Republican members about this a lot, and we want to do everything in our power to help.

Hello everybody. It’s been a busy week here on Capitol Hill. I’m sure you have all seen the debate going on across the country concerning border security. The Democrats have tried to misrepresent what our views are. So I want to take a minute just to set the record straight.

Hello everyone. I hope all my friends out in blogosphere had a safe and happy holiday. It was good to have some time with my family, but now we’re back to business and getting ready for this second half of the legislative session.

It has been a long night. I know I’m pretty tired and I know our Members are. But it was worth it. Anyone who knows me, knows that I keep my word. Well, we made some promises to the American people. We said we would restrain spending and prioritize government programs. . . that we would make government run smarter and better. We kept our promises. And we have a lot to be proud of.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) released the following statement in response to comments by Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) regarding the War on Terror.
“I am saddened by the comments made today by Rep. Murtha. It is clear that as Nancy Pelosi’s top lieutenant on armed services, Rep. Murtha and Democratic leaders have adopted a policy of cut and run. They would prefer that the United States surrender to the terrorists who would harm innocent Americans. To add insult to injury, this is done while the President is on foreign soil.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) issued the following statement after House Democrats rejected H.R. 1606, the Online Freedom of Speech Act. The bill failed 225-182. Under the House suspension rules, it needed a two-thirds majority to pass.

Economic Activity Jumps 3.8 Percent in Third Quarter

(CNSNews.com) - The output of goods and services in the United States increased at an annual rate of 3.8 percent during the third quarter of 2005, a sign that the impact of hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the economy might not be as severe as previously believed.
According to a report released Friday by the U.S. Commerce Department, the gross domestic product (GDP) in the second quarter rose at an annual rate of 3.3 percent...
...House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) was quick to cite the good news in Friday's report.
"Today's GDP numbers illustrate that America's economic engine continues to churn because of Republicans' pro-growth policies," Hastert said. "We endured devastating hurricanes in recent months, and our already-strong economy was able to cope so that the economic destruction was not greater.
"This latest report proves that Republican policies of tax relief and fiscal responsibility are just the prescription the American economy needs," he added before promising that. "The House will continue to act to improve our economy....
