A number of different options are available when planning your trip to our nation's capitol, Washington, DC. Congressional tours, as well as public tours, are available to those who wish to visit some of the remarkable sights and landmarks located in Washington such as the White House, the Capitol, and the Supreme Court among others.

Congressional Tours

The following is a guide to the number of Congressional tours available to residents of Colorado through the office of Senator Ken Salazar.

Due to increased security in and around Washington, DC the tour information provided here may change. Please contact Senator Salazar's office at 202-224-5852 for the most up-to-date information.

White House

The White House re-opened for tours on Tuesday, September 2, 2003. Tours of the White House have been expanded to include parties of 10 or more. If your party is smaller than 10, it may be possible to be paired with other tour groups to create a party of 10 or more.

Please contact Amy humble in my Washington office at 202-224-5852 to arrange a White House tour.

White House tour requests will be accepted up to six months in advance and will be scheduled approximately one month before the requested date, from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM Tuesday through Saturday. If your request is accepted by the White House, personal security information will need to be submitted to the White House for all group members at least 10 days prior to your arrival.The White House schedule is dependent on official events taking place in the White House. Tours are not available on Sundays or on holidays. My office will do our best to accommodate your request, however, we cannot guarantee that all requests can be secured, even if they are submitted well in advance of your trip. [Top]

U.S. Capitol Building

Staff-led tours of the Capitol building may be scheduled through our office Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM.

The Capitol is closed for tours on Sunday and holidays. [Top]

US Supreme Court

Congressional-guided tours of the Supreme Court are Monday through Friday when the Court is not in session. The tour begins at 2:00 PM and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Tickets are not issued for the tour, but reservations are required. [Top]

National Archives

The National Archives have re-opened for public tours after undergoing an extensive restoration project. The Archives features the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence as well as current and past special exhibits. Tours lasting 1 1/2 hours are available Monday through Friday at 10:15 AM and 1:15 PM. Please notify our office as early as possible in order to request a Congressional tour. [Top]

Bureau of Engraving and Printing

A limited number of Congressional tours may be arranged Monday through Friday for constituents interested in visiting the center responsible for the design and manufacture of US currency, postage stamps, Treasury notes and other US securities. Tours begin at 8:15 AM and 4:15 PM. Please notify our office as early as possible if you wish to arrange a Congressional tour. [Top]

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)

Due to security concerns the FBI is closed to the public for tours.

Public Tours

In addition to Congressional tours, there are a number of free public tours. Public tours are arranged so the maximum number of people can visit the magnificent sights in Washington. The following is a list of some public tours offered at sites throughout the Washington, DC area. [Top]

US Supreme Court

The Supreme Court is open to visitors on weekdays when the Court is not in session. From 9:30 AM until 3:30 PM there are two exhibits open to the public. In addition, a lecture about the Court is given every hour on the half-hour. The Supreme Court is located across from the East Front of the Capitol on 1st Street, S.E. between Maryland Avenue and East Capitol Street.

The public is also invited to attend oral arguments, which begin the first Monday in October and continue until late April. Oral arguments are conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday beginning at 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Seating is limited to a first-come, first-serve basis. [Top]

Library of Congress

Tours of the Library of Congress are offered Monday through Friday at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM. Tours begin at the ground floor lobby of the Thomas Jefferson Building and last approximately forty-five minutes. Fifteen minutes prior to each tour a slide presentation will be shown in the Orientation Theater, located on the ground floor. [Top]

US Holocaust Memorial and Museum

The Museum's main exhibit, "The Holocaust" is recommended for visitors eleven years and older. The exhibition starts with life before the Holocaust in the early 1930s and ends with the aftermath of the Holocaust after 1945. Passes for the exhibit are free but are required. Same day pass distribution begins at 10:00 AM at the Permanent Exhibition Pass Desk (14th Street entrance) on a first-come, first-serve basis. Passes are timed at 15 minute intervals from 10:00 AM to 3:45 PM. Tickets are limited to four per person. Advance passes may be acquired by calling ProTix, (800) 400-9373. There is a service charge and a limit of 10 passes per group.

Additional Attractions in the Washington, DC Area

Arlington National Cemetery

Across the Memorial Bridge in Virginia. Open daily from 8 AM to 5 PM October through March and from 8 AM to 7 PM April through September. Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Amphitheater, the Custis-Lee Mansion and the graves of President John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis, Robert F. Kennedy and President William Howard Taft. Changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier every hour on the hour and every half hour during the summer months. [Top]

Botanic Gardens

The newly renovated 65 year old Conservatory offers the citizens of Washington and visitors from across the nation a beautiful and fascinating living plant museum on our Nation's mall at the foot of the U.S. Capitol. [Top]

Dumbarton Oaks

1703 32nd Street, N.W. Gardens open daily from 2 PM to 6 PM. Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 2 PM to 5 PM. Both are closed on federal holidays. Phone: 202-338-8278. [Top]

Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial

On the Tidal Basin in West Potomac Park the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial is a landscape of four outdoor rooms with granite walls, inscriptions, waterfalls and thousands of plants, shrubs and trees along the famous cherry tree walk. [Top]

Ford's Theater and Lincoln Museum

10th Street between E and F Streets, N.W. Ford's Theater museum is open every day except Christmas from 9 AM to 5 PM. When a matinee is scheduled or a rehearsal is in progress, the theater is closed to tours. Phone: 202-426-6924. [Top]

Frederick Douglass Memorial Home

1411 W Street, S.E. Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. Closed Thanksgiving and Christmas. The home of abolitionist Frederick Douglass, an escaped slave who became one of the most eloquent spokesman for the abolition of slavery. Phone: 202-426-5960. [Top]

Georgetown

West of Rock Creek Park is Georgetown. The Old Stone House -- the oldest standing house in Washington is found in Georgetown in addition to boutiques, restaurants, nightclubs and Georgetown University. [Top]

Jefferson Memorial

South Bank of the Tidal Basin. Open 24 hours daily. At the Swan Boathouse, you may rent a paddleboat to cruise the Tidal Basin. [Top]

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

Regular tours are conducted by Friends of the Kennedy Center volunteers daily from 10 AM to 1 PM. Visitors should go to the Tour Lounge, Parking Level A. Phone: 202-426-6895. [Top]

Korean War Veterans Memorial

West end of National Mall. Open daily from 8 AM to 11:45 PM. Garden memorial that includes a black granite wall with murals, a reflecting pool and statues. [Top]

Lincoln Memorial

West Potomac Park at the foot of the 23rd Street, N.W. Open 24 hours daily. Phone: 202-426-6895. [Top]

Mount Vernon

Home of George Washington. Open to the public daily from 9 AM to 5 PM March through October. Open November through February 9 AM to 4 PM admission - $11; Senior Citizens - $10.50; Children 6-11 years - $5; 6 and under free. Phone: 703-780-2000. [Top]

National Aquarium

14th Street between Constitution Avenue and D Street, N.W. located in the US Department of Commerce building. Tanks of fish, frogs, alligators, sharks, etc. Open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM except Christmas. Adults - $3.50; children under 2-10 - $1, senior citizens and military personnel - $3, under age two - free. Phone: 202-482-2825. [Top]

National Cathedral

Massachusetts and Wisconsin Avenues, N.W. Guided tours: Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 4:30 PM, Sunday 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. The Gardens are open until dusk. Phone: 202-537-6207. [Top]

National Gallery of Art

4th Street between the Mall and Constitution Avenue, N.W. Affiliated with the Smithsonian. Highlights: Renaissance paintings, Dutch masterworks, French Impressionists and 20th-Century paintings/sculptures. [Top]

National Zoo

3000 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. Grounds open daily from 8 AM to 6 PM from September 16 through April 30 and from 8 AM to 8 PM. May 1 through September 15. Buildings are open 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. during the winter months, and from 9 AM during the summer months. Phone: 202-673-4800. [Top]

Old Post Office Pavilion

Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street, N.W. Open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM. Federal offices, shops, restaurants, boutiques and an open courtyard. Phone: 202-289-4224. [Top]

Smithsonian Institution

Free admission. Phone: 202-357-1300. Hours: The Washington Museums are open daily, except Christmas from 10 AM to 5:30 PM.

Vietnam Veterans War Memorial

Henry Bacon Drive and Constitution Avenue, N.W. Constructed of black granite to recognize all Americans who served in the Vietnam War. As a special tribute to those who did not return, the names of the 58,000 plus who gave their lives or who remain missing are inscribed in the Memorial's walls. Open all day, all year. [Top]

Washington Monument

On the Mall at 15th Street, N.W. Open daily through Labor Day from 8 AM to midnight, September through March from 9 AM to 5 PM. [Top]

Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts

Virginia Route 7 near Vienna. The nation's first National Park for the performing arts offers opera, symphonic music, pop concerts, jazz and ballet. Concerts are given all winter in the Barns, which have 350 indoor seats. The Filene Center has approximately 7,000 indoor/outdoor seats. Phone: 202-225-1916. [Top]

World War II Memorial

On the Mall at 17th Street, N.W.,the National World War II Memorial, which will be dedicated on Saturday, May 29, 2004, will be the first national memorial dedicated to all who served during World War II. The memorial will honor all military veterans of the war, the citizens on the home front, the nation at large, and the high moral purpose and idealism that motivated the nation's call to arms.
