Community Infrastructure is the Key
South Carolina provides a quality of life second-to-none with its natural mountain landscapes, miles of pristine coastline and unparalleled cultural heritage. With its charm, history and natural beauty, our state is attracting visitors, residents, corporate headquarters and new investment every day. I believe that we can preserve our state’s natural resources while also balancing economic growth to move our state forward.
Community infrastructure – an effective transportation system, an educated workforce and accessible water/sewer access – is key to ensuring a high quality of life for South Carolinians, because it attracts new investment and creates high-paying jobs. I favor returning as much federal funding for these types of projects back to states in the form of block grants which are then distributed on a priority basis set by state and local leaders, not bureaucrats in Washington. South Carolina will thrive if empowered to make the decisions that affects its citizens at the local level.
I believe local solutions are also the best approach to local environmental concerns. The federal government often encroaches on states and localities with a one-size-fits-all approach to regulation that is generally less responsive to community needs. We must recognize that each community is different and therefore requires different environmental remedies. By minimizing federal government bureaucracy and returning decisions to the local level, we can allow states and communities to be more flexible in tailoring their policies to address local concerns.
As a member of the Environment and Public Works Committee, I am committed to common sense environmental efforts which partner landowners with preservationists and environmentalists with developers. With public and private parties coming to the table and working together, I believe we can develop creative solutions that preserve historic and environmentally sensitive areas while also providing new opportunities for economic growth and progress…and create an even higher quality of life for all South Carolinians.
