During the month of November, America is called to celebrate the many families whose lives have been touched by adoptions, and to recognize the thousands of children who still wait in the foster care system for permanent, loving homes.

One of my top goals in serving South Carolina and the nation in the U.S. Senate is to increase adoption awareness and help create an adoption-friendly culture in America.

Adoption is the best alternative to abortion. We can argue all we want: pro-life, pro-choice, but adoption is something on which we can agree. When we save children, we give new life to families, and we solve a problem that is polarizing America.

Many families who choose to adopt are forced to spend thousands of dollars before they can open their home to a child in need. Many young mothers who want a stable home for their babies are forced to overcome senseless regulatory burdens.

Every child deserves a loving and nurturing home and we must knock down barriers that prevent adoptions. We must streamline the process, and make adoption more accessible and more affordable.

Adoption helps build strong families in our country. It not only allows the mother to choose life, it gives the child a better life in a loving home.

Adoption represents the very best of the American spirit. The loving parents who invite children into their homes and the mothers who make this life saving choice are true American heroes. There may be unwanted pregnancies but there are no unwanted children.
