Immigration and Border Issues |
The United States has long been the land of hope and opportunity. We have always valued hard work, individual responsibility, and equal justice under the law. For over a century, the Statue of Liberty has welcomed the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses yearning to breathe free. And while immigrants from around the globe come to this country seeking a better future for themselves and their families, I strongly believe that these immigrants should arrive through legal channels.
In response to the ever-growing number of illegal aliens coming across our borders, Congress has taken several steps to address the way immigration is handled. By creating the Department of Homeland Security, Congress created an agency that could monitor not only terrorism but also immigration (a means by which terrorists often enter our country). All too often, the two coincide. Although the Department continues to be monitored by Congress, we should allow them the ability to operate with as little interference as possible.
I believe these are important steps that we must continue to build upon if we wish to secure our borders from unlawful entry. Especially in a post-9/11 world, we cannot turn a blind eye to the issue of illegal immigration, for our nation’s security depends on improving our border control so that we know who is and who is not in our country.
