During a visit to Capitol Hill, President George W. Bush asked us to tell everyone back home that we are working hard to prevent another 9/11. I really do believe this is true. As Republicans and Democrats put aside their differences, they are better able to figure out the best ways to prevent terrorist attacks at home.
The terrorist strikes on 9/11 showed us just how vulnerable we are and how much more needs to be done to secure our borders. As a Congressman for the Fourth District of South Carolina, I supported legislation that increased security while not infringing upon the very freedoms for which we fight. Additionally, I participated in debates over securing our skies and ports and voted on legislation that strengthens our borders, protects our ports, helps prepare the nation in case of a bioterror attack, and arms pilots to defend the cockpit against hijackers.
When President Bush called on us in Congress to create a Cabinet level department that would deal specifically with securing our homeland, we responded. We created the Department of Homeland Security, a department that brought over 100 smaller agencies together into two bureaus: the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection.
While I believe that small government is good government, I also believe that it should be efficient and focused. I will continue to work hard and make sure that the Department keeps its focus on its goal of protecting our lives and our freedoms. As a senator, I promise to continue to fight for legislation that better secures our borders and better protects our freedoms.
