WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following statement regarding the Senate’s passage of S. 3661 which amends section 29 of the International Air Transportation Competition Act of 1979 relating to air transportation to and from Love Field, Texas:

“Consumers benefit when competition exists and yet for far too long, citizens in North Texas have paid a price in higher airfares because of legislation passed by Congress years ago. Congressional action on the Wright Amendment has been a long time coming and this agreement reflects many years of hard work, dedication and determination by countless parties on both sides. It will afford literally millions of citizens in North Texas and elsewhere the enormous benefits of enhanced airline competition that have long been denied because of the Wright Amendment. I’m very pleased that all parties were able to come together today. I would like to thank in particular my Texas colleague, U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, for her many years of hard work and leadership, and my Judiciary Committee colleague, U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, for working closely with me in a good faith effort to address his concerns. This is great news for the citizens of North Texas and I hope the House of Representatives will act quickly to send this bill to the President for his signature.”
