WASHINGTON—U.S. Sen. John Cornyn made the following statement regarding the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Rita:

“It’s important to recognize the people of Southeast Texas for their hard work in the past year – many went above the call of duty in preparing for Hurricane Rita and responding after it hit. It was an exemplary demonstration of people working hard, working together, to address a serious disaster.

“Also, we have been working hard here in Congress, particularly in the Texas delegation, to make sure that the victims of Rita have received the assistance and resources they’ve needed to get back on their feet. We’ve come a long way, but there is still more to do.

“One year later, the region is much better off than in the immediate aftermath, but it’s taken the hard work, determination, and solid aspirations of a lot of good people to recover from the devastation.

“While the recovery continues, I’ll keep working with local, state and federal officials to ensure all needs are met.”

Cornyn, who has played a key role in the fight for hurricane recovery funding, joined various officials in August to announce $428,671,849 in additional funding headed to Texas for hurricane recovery efforts through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. The assistance, which comes through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), was approved by Congress earlier this year but had been previously unallocated.

Following Hurricane Rita, Sen. Cornyn traveled to several Texas cities affected, including to Beaumont where he met with local officials and offered continued assistance. He also met with local leaders at the Houston TranStar Center and visited the Tyler/Smith County Emergency Operations Center at ETMC-EMS.

Sen. Cornyn is a member of the following Senate Committees: Armed Services; Judiciary; Budget; Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and Joint Economic. He is also the chairman of the subcommittees on Immigration, Border Security and Citizenship and Emerging Threats and Capabilities. He served previously as Texas Attorney General, Bexar County Judge and Texas Supreme Court Justice.
