Labor & Employment Increasing the Federal Minimum Wage Congresswoman Solis is a staunch supporter of an increase in the federal minimum wage. She is a cosponsor of legislation (H.R. 2429) to raise the wage rate to $7.25. As a California State Senator in 1996, she successfully led the fight to increase California's minimum wage to $5.75. Defending Workers' Rights to Organize Congresswoman Solis is a staunch defender of workers' rights. She strongly supports the Employee Free Choice Act (H.R. 1696) to strengthen the right to organize and opposes any effort to amend the 40-hour work week and the overtime requirements provided under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Preventing Workplace Injuries Congresswoman Solis is fighting for safer and healthier working conditions for all employees. She supports increased funding for the U.S. Department of Labor to combat poor working environments, especially sweatshop activity in the U.S. and abroad. Supporting Fair Trade, Not Free Trade Horrified by sweatshop conditions at home and abroad and the huge loss of American jobs because of trade deals, Congresswoman Solis strongly opposes any trade agreement which does not include strong labor, environmental, and human rights protections. She voted against the U.S.-Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA) and granting the President "Fast Track" trade negotiating authority because it will further the loss of family-supporting jobs to nations where corporations routinely exploit workers and the environment. Eliminating Corporate Corruption Serious corporate fraud and mismanagement has resulted in massive layoffs. Congresswoman Solis supports reforms to put workers first, hold CEOs accountable, put integrity back in to corporations and the capital markets, and end corporate corruption of politics. During the 107th Congress, she voted for the Corporate Fraud and Accountability Act (Public Law 107-204) to help crack down on corporate crime and restore investor confidence.
