Education

Making College A Reality for All Students

I believe all students should have a chance to attend college. I oppose federal cuts to student financial aid programs and support expanding the Pell Grant program, which makes college more affordable for students. I support increased funding for GEAR UP, which encourages middle school students to become college-ready, and TRIO programs such as Upward Bound.

Improving the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)

I strongly support legislation to fully fund NCLB and to suspend its sanctions if it is not fully funded. The NCLB law should be fair, flexible, and fully funded.

Improving Minority Students' Access to Quality Education

I support colleges which serve large minority populations, including California State University Los Angeles and East Los Angeles College, which are located in the 32nd Congressional District, as well as Rio Hondo College, Mt. San Antonio College and Citrus College, which serve students who reside in the 32nd District. I support legislation that would not only provide money to colleges that serve large minority populations, but would also grant money to colleges to help improve their ability to meet the specific needs of minority students.

Defending the Most Vulnerable

I strongly support Head Start and Even Start, as well as increased funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Revitalizing Elementary Schools I support federal funding for school construction and am an original cosponsor of the America's Better Classroom Act, the leading proposal to provide federal incentives for the construction and renovation of public schools. She also worked to defeat voucher proposals that would have allowed federal education funds to be siphoned off for private school vouchers.
