ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER (API) ISSUES

Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus
Congresswoman Solis is a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). CLICK HERE to learn more about CAPAC.

Social Security - Opposing Risky Privatization Plans
Nationally more than 785,000 API seniors depend on Social Security. Privatizing Social Security would cut guaranteed benefits by more than 40% in the coming decades and drain trillions of dollars away from Social Security. Congresswoman Solis is fighting to ensure that Social Security benefits are not compromised by risky privatization schemes. She believes that all American workers should get the benefits they paid for, and that we must protect Social Security for the future generations.

Healthcare– Expanding Coverage and Services
In the 32nd Congressional District, between 40-60% residents speak an API language as their primary language. In part because of cultural and linguistic barriers, 35% of the API community lacks health insurance. Congresswoman Solis supports legislation to meet the heath needs of the API community, such as expanding health care coverage, removing language and cultural barriers to receiving quality health care, and eliminating health disparities in our community.

Education – Improving Access for Minority Students
Education is the foundation upon which opportunities are created for all of our children. Congresswoman Solis supports programs that prepare students for college and meet the specific needs of minority and bilingual students and will continue to fight to enable immigrant students to have access to higher education. She also supports full funding for higher education institutions serving the specific needs of API students.

Civil Rights – Defending Individual Freedoms
Congresswoman Solis supports the Wartime Parity and Justice Act which would allow certain individuals of Japanese ancestry who were brought forcibly to the United States from nations in Latin America during World War II to receive restitution. She is a staunch defender of civil rights for all Americans.

Immigration – Working for Comprehensive Reform
As the daughter of immigrants, Congresswoman Solis supports comprehensive immigration reform to fix our broken immigration laws, reunite families, and protect our borders.

Small Business - Helping Minority Businesses
Small businesses and minority enterprises are the backbone of our economy. These enterprises account for half of the national gross domestic product and three-fourths of new jobs created each year. Congresswoman Solis supports more funding for the Small Business Administration, which makes capital more accessible to small businesses and helps minority owned businesses grow.

Domestic Violence - Supporting Victims of Domestic Violence
Congresswoman Solis helped lead efforts to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) in 2005 and believes efforts to end domestic violence must address factors like cultural differences, linguistic differences and immigration. Two measures authored by Congresswoman Solis to address these factors were included in the reauthorization of VAWA.

Veterans Benefits – Access for Filipino Veterans
Service in the organized military forces of the Government of the Commonwealth of the Philippines and the Philippine Scouts prior to 1946 was also service to defense of the United States. Congresswoman Solis supports legislation to allow those who fought before 1946 to access the Department of Veterans Affairs for the purpose of accessing benefits.
