Los Angeles, CA - Today, Congresswoman Hilda L. Solis (CA-32), Co-Chair of the bipartisan Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues and Chair of the Democratic Women’s Working Group, commemorated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month by recognizing four organizations for their work to end domestic violence and improve the quality of life for survivors of domestic violence.
The four organizations recognized are: Chicana Service Action Center, the Chinatown Service Center, the San Gabriel Valley YWCA WINGS program, and the Violence Intervention Program (V.I.P.). These organizations provide services, counseling and support to victims of domestic violence in the 32nd Congressional District.
“In California alone, more than 600,000 women each year are victims of domestic violence. It is the efforts of organizations such as these that are making a real difference in the lives of these women and to our communities,” said Congresswoman Solis. “I am proud to honor these organizations for their efforts. In honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, I encourage all spokespersons, activities and policymakers to reaffirm their commitment to bringing an end to this senseless violence and ensuring a more secure future for women around our country and world.”
As part of the event, Verizon Wireless donated five pre-paid cell phones to each of the four organizations which include 3,000 minutes each.
Congresswoman Solis led the effort to renew the Violence Against Women Act in 2005, which included two provisions she authored to help immigrants and women of color who are victims of domestic violence. As a State Senator, Solis authored a record 17 laws to protect victims of domestic violence.
