Foreign Policy and Defense
My foreign policy involvements during my years in Congress have ranged from helping direct start-up assistance to the emerging democratic parliaments of Central and Eastern Europe, to numerous trips and other efforts aimed at promoting a just and lasting settlement between Israel and her neighbors. I am a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, have chaired the Congressional Study Group on Germany, and have participated in parliamentary exchanges with Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, and other countries.
I support the relentless pursuit of al Qaeda and other terrorist groups and feel that the Bush Administration’s costly and poorly planned invasion and occupation of Iraq have diverted us from this mission. I have spearheaded a successful effort to initiate a General Accounting Office investigation of the use of private military contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan, and I have introduced legislation to bring such contractors under U.S. law and to set basic standards for contracting. That legislation was passed by the House in May.
