Homeland Security and First Responders

Our world changed on September 11, and it became clear that one of our nation's top priorities needed to be assuring that we did all we could to avoid being the victims of another terrorist attack.

As a member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, I have worked to ensure that all the people responsible for protecting our country receive the funding and support they need to do their jobs. We have definitely made progress, and our country is much better prepared to face the terrorist threat than it was in 2001, but I am very concerned that often the Administration's rhetoric has not matched its actions. Since 9-11, we have spent 22 times as much on tax cuts as we have on protecting our homeland from terrorists, and the Administration has proposed massive cuts in funding for our nation's first responders.

Protecting our nation and overseeing the formation of our new Department of Homeland Security is no easy task, but we could be doing a better job, and I will continue to work to see that our first responders receive the funding they need, that Americans' fundamental liberties are protected, and that we create a robust and effective homeland security apparatus.
