Congressman Devin Nunes
--
A Brief Biography
|
Rep. Devin Nunes – a second-term Congressman from the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley in California – has turned his farm-spun work ethic into an aggressive legislative agenda in Washington, D.C. that pays significant dividends to the residents of the 21st District. Rep. Nunes serves on the House Committee on Ways and Means, which fits his legislative interests in health care, trade and taxes. He was appointed to the subcommittees on Oversight and Human Resources. He was formerly the Chairman of the Resources Subcommittee on National Parks, where he pursued common sense management principles for the nation’s vast public lands, national parks and monuments. He also focused his attention on the problems of drug production on public lands, as well as the environmental impact of illegal immigration across many of these lands. Additionally, he served on the Agriculture Committee where he was concerned with policies that negatively effect agricultural trade and was active in the debate on food safety issues, including those that involve homeland security. Rep. Nunes was also honored to also serve on the Veterans’ Affair Committee where he oversaw the well being of the nation’s veterans. He has consistently voted in favor of raising pay for our active-duty military personnel, as well as much-needed increases on benefits for our valued veterans. In addition to his committee assignments, Rep. Nunes serves as an Assistant Majority Whip – a leadership position in the House of Representatives. During his tenure in Congress, Rep. Nunes has spearheaded many local efforts to bring attention to the challenges residents of the 21st District face, including access to healthcare, upgrades to the transportation infrastructure, increased surface water supply, cleaner air and greater federal investment in local communities. He meets regularly with constituents on a variety of topics in his main office in Visalia, as well as a satellite office in Clovis. Background Devin grew up in Tulare County on the family farm, where he learned the value of a hard day’s work, as well as the importance of staying informed with the forces that shape public policy. As he grew older, he became increasingly interested in helping ensure those forces focused their attention on helping families, businesses, and the communities they affect. After graduating from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural Business and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture, Devin returned to work on the family farm. There, he focused his attention on educational issues in Tulare County and decided to run for the Board of Trustees for the College of Sequoias. He served one 4-year term and won election to a second term. During his tenure on the COS Board of Trustees, the congressman led the effort to provide smaller communities greater access to the Internet and satellite educational services. During that second term, he was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as California state director for the United States Department of Agriculture, Rural Development. When congressional boundaries were redrawn in 2002, Devin realized he had a unique opportunity to represent his home county and the two most productive agricultural regions in the nation in the U.S. Capitol. He ran for Congress and won the seat in November 2002 with 72 percent of the vote. He was re-elected in 2004 with an even higher margin of 74 percent. The unique geography, climate, demographics and economic factors of the Central Valley pose many challenges to its residents, including water supply, trade, health care and transportation. Since taking office, the congressman has written more than 30,000 letters to constituents and helped hundreds of residents with their problems with various government agencies, ranging from the Social Security Administration and Veterans Affairs to Immigration and the Department of Education, among others. Devin and his wife, Elizabeth – a school teacher, live in Visalia. |
