9/11 Illness Claims the Life of Hero Nun |
Rep. Carolyn Maloney reacts to the passing of Sister Cindy Mahoney, who volunteered at Ground Zero for six months |
NEW YORK, NY – A nun who was a dedicated volunteer at Ground Zero for six months has died of the illnesses she contracted from breathing the toxic air there. Sister Cindy Mahoney passed away in South Carolina yesterday. She had asked before she died that an autopsy be performed on her body to aid in the upcoming 9/11 health effects lawsuit.
Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), released the following statement today: “This is a tragic example of how people came from across the country to help New York and how many of them went home ill – in this case fatally ill. “This case is an example of why we need a national, comprehensive plan to help these heroes before more of them die from their injuries and illnesses. The administration has not heeded our calls for a national plan, and until we have one, we will never know how many more Sister Cindy’s are out there. “My thoughts and prayers are with Sister Cindy and her family. May she rest in peace.” ### |
