WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) announced today that Family Connection, Inc. will receive two grants totaling $275,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to serve the Greater Birmingham area’s homeless and runaway youth.
A $175,000 grant has been awarded through the HHS Basic Centers Program to Family Connection’s Residential Care Center in Alabaster. In operation for over 20 years, the center provides care and counseling for homeless and runaway youth. Staff is available 24 hours a day to meet immediate physical and safety needs of youth, as well as to assist them in resolving conflicts with family that have put them on the street.
Family Connection’s Project Hope, located in Birmingham, will receive a $100,000 grant from the HHS Street Outreach Program. Project Hope is a daytime shelter for runaway youth. A trained professional is available at the center to provide counseling and to assist youth in finding employment and transitioning from homelessness to safe and supportive living arrangements.
“I am happy to report that Family Connection will be getting valuable federal assistance to serve the community’s most vulnerable young people,” said Sessions. “Family Connection strikes the proper balance between nurturing and empowering at-risk youth to get them back on their feet and on the road to a productive future.”
