Reynolds: $9.2 million for Niagara Falls Air Base Approved
Congressman secures funding slated for new airmen's quarters

U.S. Representatives Thomas M. Reynolds, (R-Clarence), and Louise M. Slaughter, (D-Fairport), announced today that the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved $9.2 million in federal funding for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station (NFARS).  The funding request, spearheaded in the House by Congressman Reynolds and supported by Congresswoman Slaughter, was included in the fiscal year 2006 Military Quality of Life spending bill.  In the past two years Reynolds has lead the effort to secure over $20 million  for NFARS.

"This funding is another piece of good news for our airmen at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station," Reynolds said.  "After working with other members of the Western New York congressional delegation to save Niagara Air Base, this funding takes the next logical step -- improving the quality of life of our airmen at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.  Furthermore, I look forward to continuing my work with the Air Force to ensure the BRAC Commission's recommendations for the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station are met."

"I am pleased to have worked with Rep. Reynolds and the Defense Department to include the $9.2 million for stage one of the visiting quarters," stated Congressman Slaughter.  "Last week I met with Air Force Secretary Wynne and pressed him to fund the second stage of the project -- $7.8 million -- in the President's 2007 budget.  The visiting quarters demonstrates that the delegation is committed to expanding the base and creating more good paying jobs in Western New York."

The funding will be used for the construction of a new Visiting Airmen's Quarters at the base.  The current facilities are 50 years old and do not meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

BRAC recommendations became final after a House vote approved them on October 27, 324-84.  This effort emphasized the strategic importance of Niagara Air Base, and saved more than 3,000 local jobs.

"The decision to keep Niagara Air Base open speaks volumes about the tremendous quality of our base and our brave men and women stationed there," Reynolds said.  "It also says a lot about the incredible effort put forth by our local community and leaders.  This funding will continue to improve Niagara Air Base, and improve the lives of those stationed there."
