Congress Ratifies BRAC Decision, Saving Niagara Base
Congressional vote is final step in BRAC process

U.S. Representative Thomas M. Reynolds, R- Clarence, today voted for the final approval of the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission report. The vote in Congress, 85-324, was the final step in the BRAC process to help save the Niagara Air Base.

"Today, the last step in a long journey was taken to save the Niagara Air Base," Reynolds said.  "By keeping Niagara open we have a more secure homeland, and a large employer staying right here in Western New York.  I'm happy to have been part of the team that saved Niagara and the almost 3,000 jobs at the base."

Among its decisions, the Commission voted to retain all personnel and equipment from the 914th Airlift Wing (Air Force Reserve), including the eight C-130s currently stationed at the base.  All personnel from the 107th Air Refueling Wing (Air National Guard) also will be retained as an Associate Wing.

"The President and BRAC Commissioners recognized the important contribution that the Niagara Air Base makes to homeland security," Reynolds added.  "Now that these decisions are final, our soldiers and defense resources can focus solely on defending America and winning the War on Terror."

Reynolds spearheaded Congressional efforts on behalf of the air base including leading a last minute bid to save the 107th Air National Guard, which was still going to be eliminated even after it had become clear that the 914th Airlift Wing was likely to remain intact.

"Of all the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve bases originally recommended for closure, Niagara is the only base that will remain operational," Reynolds said.  "At the end of the day the efforts of our Western New York team paid off for our national security, airmen, and community."
