Nominations to a United States Military Academy

Members of Congress can nominate a number of young people from their district to compete for admission to a United States Military Service Academy, and then the academy chooses its cadet class from a national competitive pool of students.

The United States operates five Military Service Academies, all of which offer a rigorous four-year education program resulting in a bachelor's degree. Each academy seeks students who are strong academically or athletically, with various SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) score requirements. A student wishing to compete for admission should seek a nomination from my office early in their senior year in high school, at the latest. After graduation, cadets go into active duty or continue their education.

To apply, download this initial application (PDF version), complete it, and get it to Denise Blanchard in my Brownsville District Office.  We will send interested students other forms and candidate records to be completed. The final decision for cadet selection is the sole responsibility of the academies themselves: four academies use the nomination process: The U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kingspoint, NY and the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs.

Young people interested in the U.S. Coast Guard Academy should apply with the academy directly; no nomination is necessary. People interested in a maritime career (like port navigator or tug captain) would like the education offered by the Coast Guard Academy.

To compete with other young South Texans for a nomination for admission, please contact my office at 956.541-1242; print out this application to mail to me at: 1805 Ruben Torres Blvd., Suite B-27, Paseo Plaza Center, Brownsville, Texas, 78256; or fax to me at 956.544-6915.

The application on this page is solely to obtain a nomination through the office of Congressman Ortiz.  It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make contact with the academy of choice and submit an application with them.
