Funding our PrioritiesBudgets are a reflection of who we are and what we value as a country. Family incomes are down and wages are stagnant, leaving American families with less and less money to meet their needs. Because of misplaced priorities, we have seen a projected $5.6 trillion budget surplus into a projected $3.5 trillion budget deficit. While the richest 1% of our country receive tax cuts, our seniors, middle class and children are suffering. It is up to the Congress to get this country back in order and Congressman Ortiz will continue his efforts to raise the minimum wage, expand health coverage for all Americans and adequately fund our education system. As the Congress begins discussions on the Fiscal Year 2007 bill, Congressman Ortiz will continue to fight for programs beneficial to the 27th District: funding for health care and education initiatives, veterans’ benefits and homeland security. The budget proposed by the President this year continues a record of wrong priorities. This new budget cuts Medicare and Medicaid funding, makes some seniors pay more for the same care they have today, fails to provide the funding promised by No Child Left Behind, adds trillions of dollars in new deficits, asks veterans to pay an enrollment fee for VA services, and it inadequately funds border security. As a proud grandfather, Congressman Ortiz believes our children, our future are what we should value the most in our country. Unfortunately, the budgets proposed by the President and the Congressional majority do not value our future, they simply add to our national deficit and leave a large debt to them.
