Terrorists in America
We are fighting the front-line of the War on Terrorism in Iraq. Yet, because there have been no attacks on American soil since the tragedies of September 11th, 2001, we often forget that the War on Terrorism is being continuously waged on the home front. Every day, tens of thousands of Americans are working hard to protect our nation from terrorists who are bent on repeating or surpassing the most deadly attack we have ever seen.
According to the Department of Justice, War on Terrorism successes on the home front have included:
- Five terrorist cells in Buffalo, Detroit, Seattle, Portland (Oregon), and Northern Virginia have been broken up;
- 401 individuals have been criminally charged in the United States in terrorism-related investigations;
- Already, 212 individuals in the United States have been convicted or have pleaded guilty to terrorist charges;
- 113 individuals in 25 judicial districts have been charged with terrorist financing-related crimes, with 57 convictions or guilty pleas to date
Though impressive, these numbers understate the success we have had, because they do not account for the cases where individuals are deported on immigration, or other non-terrorist specific, charges in exchange for their cooperation in the form of information on terrorist leaders or activities. Although these cases do not appear as terrorism-related success stories, they have resulted in making our nation safer from terrorists by removing those individuals who were in some way assisting in the planning of a terrorist attack or activities.
Despite these overwhelming successes, the work of our fellow Americans, who have made us all safer, is largely unnoticed and unheralded. To help recognize their heroic actions, we will be updating this webpage with specific examples of victories on the home front in the War Against Terrorism.
